Getting Back On Track

Andrew 9/3/2010 7:44:00 AM

If you’ve read my blog before, you may well have noticed that it’s been a while since I posted. And you might have guessed that it was because I wasn’t really living up to what I was writing about. If you guessed that, you’d have been right. But as with many good things, time, prayer, and some discipline...

An Unexpected Award

Andrew 6/12/2009 8:08:56 AM

This past Sunday, I was delighted to be honored by my local Knights of Columbus council ( Holy Family Council #6831 ) as the council’s Knight of the Year for 2008-2009. While the Grand Knight had mentioned that he wanted to recognize me at our annual Communion Breakfast for my work in running the council...

The Temptation to Slack

Andrew 6/11/2009 5:48:44 AM

As Hamlet famously notes: When sorrows come, they come not single spies, But in battalions. So, too, with temptations, particularly when faced with adversity. It’s interesting to me that, when things are going well, everything seems to be easier. I get up early, I exercise as I should, I get more accomplished...

Back On Track and a New Milestone

Andrew 6/10/2009 7:38:21 AM

After several weeks with a chest cold that kept me off the rower, I’ve finally managed to get two consecutive days of early rising and rowing in, and it’s nice to be back (or at least on my way back) to my routine. I figured probably not much good in posting while I was sick, because who really needs to listen to me moan about not being able to exercise. I do have some observations about the experience that I’ll post soon, but for the moment I just wanted to briefly celebrate my return to rowing, and also another cool milestone.

As of yesterday, I passed a quarter of a million meters rowed since I started rowing in February. All told, I’ve rowed 257,957 meters since I started, which works out to approximately 160 miles. It just blows my mind to realize that I’ve been able to do that much in just a few short months, and notwithstanding both time out for illness and travel time.

Don’t Panic

Andrew 6/2/2009 11:02:41 AM

For any of you who might have been worried, or missing your daily fix of 0 Dark 30, despair not. I’m working through a cold that is stubbornly lingering on in my chest, which makes workouts a non-starter for the moment…and without the motivation of the workout, well, the early morning starts have been...

The Frustration of Lost Momentum

Andrew 5/20/2009 9:36:17 AM

As regular readers might have figured out by the quiet on the blog recently, things aren’t super-rosy in 0 Dark 30-land. While I got a decent start on my workouts on my recent trip to Los Angeles, a combination of lack of sleep (there’s never enough of that on the road) and the inability to get access to the equipment I prefer to use (a lame excuse, but it’s hard to get motivated for a stationary bike or stairstepper) meant that I missed more workouts than I made while in L.A.

And unfortunately, I picked up a cold while in L.A., complete with nasty cough and chest congestion. I’ll spare you the gory details, but that’s effectively prevented me from working out on my rower since I got back, though I did finally manage a couple of games with my softball team last night, which I may yet regret.

0 Dark 30 on the Road – Day 2 in L.A.

Andrew 5/12/2009 9:49:35 AM

Managed to get up earlier and down to the gym before 6am, but still too busy for me to grab one of the handful of ellipticals, so I ended up on a stairmaster instead. What I wouldn’t give for my rower right now. Tacked on some upper body weight training to compensate, but just not the same. Still, feels...

0 Dark 30 on the Road – L.A. Style

Andrew 5/12/2009 3:26:25 AM

So I’m in Los Angeles this week, for a geek conference, and trying to maintain my habits on the road once again. Day 1 was reasonably successful. I got up at 6am, and made my way down to the gym, did 25 minutes on the stationary bike (unfortunately, all the ellipticals were occupied), and a few pull...

Time for More 0 Dark 30 on the Road

Andrew 5/10/2009 10:24:23 AM

It’s that time again…later today, I’m heading out to Los Angeles for a tech conference, and I’ll be leaving behind my trusty rower, and hopefully finding a decent workout facility at the hotel, so I can keep up my momentum. I’ll report from the road as time allows. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms...

Changing Standards

Andrew 5/5/2009 4:28:58 PM

An interesting thing has happened to me. As I’ve tried to change my sleeping and waking patterns (not always successfully) and my exercise habits, my attitudes towards both have changed. I’m not sure when the change occurred…whether it was gradual, or the result of having decided to make these changes in my life, but either way, I’ve found a couple of things.

One, I now consider getting up at 7:00am to be getting up late, or sleeping in. If you asked me just a few short months ago, I would’ve told you that sleeping in meant getting up at 10:00am or later. Amazing the difference a few months can make.

Two, where prior to January, there were many days in my life that did not include any strenuous (or even non-strenuous) activity at all, today I view a week where I’ve worked out less than 5 days as less than ideal.
